Recently, i had the chance to interview Justin the developer of Deadswitch combat and the Owner of Wilkin Games. I asked him a few different questions about the game so that our community can get to know Wilkin Games and these are his answers.

Just to give our readers an insight to Wilkin games what first got you into game development?

I first got into game development back in the mid-2000s, during the golden age of Flash games. I spent countless hours on sites like Newgrounds playing classics like Madness Interactive, Defend Your Castle, and lots of stickman shooters. I was fascinated by how creative and accessible those games were - you could open your browser and instantly play something unique and fun (even in the computer lab at school)!

How would you describe Deadswitch combat to someone whose never played it before and what was your inspiration for the game?

Deadswitch Combat is a fast-paced 2D shooter that draws inspiration from the original Deadswitch games while introducing a huge amount of modern features. Players can experience multiplayer, custom servers, weapon and attachment customization, a party system, vehicles, and diverse game modes. The goal was to combine the classic aesthetics with modern shooter mechanics.

The game also supports full modding and includes an in-game editor, giving players the tools to create and share their own content. With a deep progression system and hundreds of unlocks, Deadswitch Combat blends nostalgic Flash-style gameplay with modern mechanics, making it engaging for both longtime fans and newcomers.

What makes Deadswitch different from other Tactical shooters or action games?

What sets Deadswitch Combat apart from other shooter games is the extensive content it offers in a 2D sidescroller format - something you rarely see. The game features comprehensive weapon and soldier customization, including attachments and weapon skins, allowing players to fine-tune their loadouts in ways that most 2D shooters simply don't offer. Movement is designed to feel more realistic, avoiding the exaggerated jumps or jetpacks common in arcade-style sidescrollers, which makes combat feel grounded and skill-based.

Deadswitch Combat also offers a large variety of game modes, playable in both multiplayer and local play, giving players a ton of ways to engage with the game. The in-game Editor and Workshop support also encourages community creativity, allowing players to create, share, and play custom content. This community-driven aspect continually improves the game and keeps it evolving in ways that few other games in the genre can match.

What’s one feature or mechanic you’re especially proud of?

One feature I'm proud of is the weapon customization system. Since Deadswitch Combat is a shooter at its core, I wanted the firearms to feel like the true centerpiece of the game. Every weapon can be customized with multiple attachment types (optics, lasers, ammo attachments, and more) and each category offers deeper layers of personalization. For example, selecting an ACOG scope lets you choose from multiple ACOG styles, each with distinct visual differences.

Attachments also modify weapon performance in realistic ways, like increasing zoom with sniper optics or adjusting handling with different grips. On top of that, every weapon supports a variety of skins, allowing players to make their loadout feel personal and unique - even if they're not hardcore gun enthusiasts. It's a system designed to give every player a sense of ownership over their arsenal.

What kind of players do you think Deadswitch resonates with most?

I think Deadswitch Combat resonates most with players who enjoy classic shooters but want something with more depth and re-playability. It's for those who grew up playing 2D shooter games but also for modern gamers who enjoy deep progression, customization, and community-driven content.

Whether you like experimenting with weapon builds, competing online, or creating custom maps and modes, there's something for you. Deadswitch Combat is a game that rewards both creativity and skill, appealing to nostalgic fans of the original Deadswitch games and newcomers looking for a fresh, feature-rich shooter experience.

what’s next for Deadswitch—any updates, expansions, or surprises?

There's a lot planned for Deadswitch Combat in the coming updates! Players can look forward to new maps, game modes, weapons, and attachments - all aimed at keeping the gameplay fresh and exciting. Special seasonal events (like Halloween) are present where players can earn exclusive content and rewards.

On top of that, there's already a variety of DLC content available, including full weapon skin packs, soldier items, and more. The goal is to keep expanding the game with new content and surprises so there's always something for players to look forward to.

Do you see yourself making more games in the same universe or genre?

Yes, I definitely see myself continuing to make more games in the Deadswitch universe. The Deadswitch series has always evolved with each release, and Deadswitch Combat is the next big step in that progression. My focus right now is on continuing to update and expand it - adding new content, refining gameplay, and making it the best version of Deadswitch for both new and longtime players.

Having said that, the Deadswitch series will always stay true to its roots as a 2D shooter, because that's where it started and what gives it its unique identity. Rather than moving away from that, the goal is to keep pushing what a 2D shooter can be.

Any advice for solo devs or small teams trying to build something like this?

My advice to solo devs and small teams is to start building whatever you can imagine - don't let the size of your team limit your creativity! Research, keep learning, and don't be afraid to reach out to other developers. I'm always happy to share insight and help others in the community however I can - most indie developers are the same.
