This month’s Game of the Month at Imperium Hosting is Sons of the Forest, the second installment in the trilogy that began with The Forest. While I haven’t played the original title, I spent a good amount of time with Sons of the Forest and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. One of the game’s greatest strengths is how well it blends multiple genres, offering something for nearly every type of player.

At its core, Sons of the Forest is a survival game focused on gathering resources, crafting, and building. Players chop down trees, manage supplies, and construct shelters to survive on a hostile island. The building system is especially strong, allowing for both modular construction using individual logs and blueprint-based builds for a more structured approach. This balance makes building intuitive while still allowing plenty of creative freedom.

The game also leans heavily into horror elements. The island is inhabited by cannibals that serve as the primary threat, particularly at night. These enemies rely on intimidation as much as combat, using sound, movement, and ambush tactics to keep players constantly on edge. Surface cannibals patrol the island and raid player bases, while cave-dwelling variants are more dangerous and unsettling due to their mutations and confined environments.

Without diving into spoilers, Sons of the Forest introduces helpful NPC companions that can assist with basic tasks. While AI limitations are noticeable, these companions help reduce grind by handling repetitive work, allowing players to focus more on exploration, combat, and building.

The game begins with a helicopter crash that strands players on the island. Although the map is static, there are multiple starting locations, adding variety to each playthrough. Players begin with only a few essential tools and must quickly adapt to their surroundings to survive.

For those interested in customization, Sons of the Forest supports modding, though the vanilla experience is already content-rich and satisfying on its own. Beyond survival and horror, the game also includes exploration, environmental storytelling, and subtle science fiction elements that add depth without overwhelming the core experience.

Sons of the Forest earns its place as Imperium Hosting’s Game of the Month by successfully combining survival, building, horror, and exploration into a single, compelling experience. Whether you enjoy tense combat, creative construction, or simply surviving against the odds, this game delivers on all fronts
